Quick Verdict
If you want a compact ThermoJet espresso machine for your apartment, buy the Breville Bambino (BES450BSS) new. Check the seller and current price on Amazon before you order.
Do not buy the Barista Express as your apartment machine just because it has a built-in grinder. It is a bigger, different kind of machine.
For an ultra-narrow counter, see our Dedica guide. For a budget machine, see our guide to the De'Longhi Stilosa. Pair the Bambino with an espresso-capable grinder such as the TIMEMORE C3 ESP (not the Pro).
Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for:
- renters who want the compact ThermoJet Bambino on a rented counter
- small-kitchen buyers who will refill a removable tank and will not plumb in
- beginners who will start on dual-wall baskets and still buy a grinder
- shoppers who will buy the Bambino new from a seller they trust
This guide is not for:
- people considering a resale unit or an unknown third-party offer
- people who need the ultra-narrow Dedica (see that guide)
- people shopping a tight budget (see the Stilosa in our budget guide)
- people who want a head-to-head with the Dedica or the Gaggia (see those comparisons)
- people who want automatic milk (look at the Bambino Plus)
- shoppers who want an all-in-one like the Barista Express
- cafe-volume, plumbed-in, or 58 mm commercial-style shoppers (see the Gaggia guide)
- anyone skipping the grinder and expecting dual-wall pre-ground coffee to be "dialed in"
The Short Answer
| Decision | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Compact ThermoJet machine for an apartment | Breville Bambino | The machine this guide recommends. Buy new and check the seller and price. |
| Ultra-narrow counter | De'Longhi Dedica | Different need. See Dedica for apartments. |
| Budget pump machine | De'Longhi Stilosa | Different need. See the budget espresso machine guide. |
| All-in-one with built-in grinder | Not our apartment pick | The Barista Express is mentioned for contrast only. |
| Automatic steam wand | Breville Bambino Plus | A different model. |
| Grinder for this machine | TIMEMORE C3 ESP | Espresso-capable hand grinder. Not the Pro. |
| 58 mm machine to keep | Gaggia Classic Evo Pro | See Gaggia vs Bambino. |
If you want a compact ThermoJet machine, buy the Bambino new. If you need a narrow machine, choose the Dedica. If budget is the priority, choose the Stilosa. Do not buy the Barista Express as your apartment machine.
Apartment footprint: measure both sets of dimensions
Measure the counter, not the lifestyle photo.
The Bambino's appeal in an apartment is fast ThermoJet heat-up on weekdays, in a compact machine with a tank that you can move. Breville US lists 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 in (width × depth × height). Amazon often lists 13.7 in deep × 6.3 in wide × 12 in tall. These two sets of numbers do not line up, so check both. Measure for cabinet height, pulling the rear tank, swinging the portafilter, a pitcher, and a cloth for wiping down that does not have to live in the dish rack.
It is wider than the ultra-narrow Dedica (about 5.9 in) but much narrower than the Stilosa (13.5 in on Amazon). Compared with the budget Stilosa, the Bambino gives you ThermoJet speed and a 54 mm portafilter.
The tank is the renter feature. Breville's instructions list a removable 1.4 L (47 fl oz) reservoir. You refill it; you do not plumb in. Keep the machine near the sink so the walk to refill is short.
Weight is the move-out test. Amazon often lists about 10.9 lb, light enough to lift without a cart and much lighter than the 20 lb Gaggia. Pick a permanent compact spot, then plan the move.
Heat-up is the Bambino's main advantage. Breville US says ThermoJet is ready in 3 seconds. The Dedica's thermoblock takes about 40 seconds (per De'Longhi US), and the Gaggia's traditional boiler takes minutes. Plan to brew, then steam, then wipe. Dual-wall baskets can get a weekday shot started, but they do not grind beans.
Renter test: can you unplug an 11 lb compact machine with a tank, box it, and take it to the next apartment? Yes. Before you order, make sure the offer is new and from a seller you trust, not resale.
Add an espresso grinder before you buy
The machine is not the whole setup, and the Bambino does not grind. Dual-wall baskets let you start with pre-ground coffee, but they will not let you dial in a real single-wall shot. A blade mill or a drip burr grinder will choke the shot or let it gush.
The grinder we suggest is the TIMEMORE Chestnut C3 ESP (not the C3 ESP Pro). It is espresso-capable, has no motor, and fits in a drawer, leaving the Bambino as the one appliance on the counter. See our grinder guide for the Breville Bambino.
If you already know you will not hand grind, read First Espresso Setup If You Cannot Hand Grind and Baratza Encore vs Encore ESP. Buy any electric grinder new.
You still need a scale, because dose and yield have to be weighed. See our beginner espresso setup guide and how to split a beginner budget. Spend any money left over on the grinder and scale before a standalone frother. The Bambino already has a manual steam wand.
Breville Bambino: why we recommend it
Good for: renters who want compact ThermoJet speed from a tank-fed machine on the counter
Why we chose it:
The Breville Bambino BES450BSS is the machine this guide recommends. It is not the Bambino Plus and not the Barista Express. Per Breville US, it has 3-second ThermoJet heat-up, a 54 mm portafilter, and a removable 1.4 L tank. It needs no plumbing and has no built-in grinder. In our most recent check, Amazon.com was the seller, after a period when the main offer came from a third-party seller. Buy it new, check the current price and seller before you order, and skip resale offers.
Good fit if:
- fast weekday ThermoJet heat-up is what you want, and you have measured both depth and width
- you will refill a 1.4 L tank and will not plumb in
- you will buy it new from a seller you trust
- you will buy a grinder such as the C3 ESP instead of skipping it
- you can lift about 11 lb at move-out
- you want 54 mm Bambino parts later, not the Dedica's 51 mm or the Gaggia's 58 mm
Skip it if:
- you need the ultra-narrow Dedica
- you need a budget machine like the Stilosa
- you were about to buy the Barista Express for its built-in grinder
- you want the Bambino Plus's automatic wand
- you want 58 mm parts later (see the Gaggia guide)
- you refuse to buy a grinder
Small-space notes:
Depending on which dimensions you trust, it is 6.1–6.3 in wide, which suits small apartments. Depth (11.9–13.7 in) is what to measure carefully. Measure cabinet height against 12–13.5 in plus cup clearance. Keep it near the sink, pull the tank to refill, and wipe the wand after steaming. Descaling is part of owning it.
Tradeoff:
You get a compact machine with ThermoJet heat-up. You give up the Dedica's ultra-narrow body if counter width is the real problem, and the Stilosa's lower price if budget is the priority. You also give up the Barista Express's built-in grinder, and the 58 mm accessories. This guide covers the Bambino for apartments, not every Breville on Amazon.
Before you buy on Amazon:
Check that the listing is the Bambino BES450BSS in Brushed Stainless Steel. Also check that it is new, the US-voltage version, and comes with the portafilter and baskets, and check the seller, returns, and current price. Skip resale offers. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1JPPG2L?tag=next-1-20
Why Barista Express is not the apartment default
Good for: shoppers who deliberately want an all-in-one with a built-in grinder and accept its larger footprint
The Barista Express puts a grinder in the same body as the espresso machine. That solves the "machine does not grind" problem but creates a different one for apartments: a permanent station on the counter and a heavier machine. We do not recommend it here. If you want a built-in grinder on purpose, the Barista Express may suit you. If you want a compact apartment machine, choose the Bambino and buy a C3 ESP separately.
Other machines and comparisons we cover
The De'Longhi Dedica is covered in De'Longhi Dedica for Apartments, for ultra-narrow counters. The De'Longhi Stilosa is covered in our budget espresso machine guide. For head-to-heads, see Breville Bambino vs De'Longhi Dedica and Gaggia Classic Evo Pro vs Breville Bambino. For broader lists, see Espresso Machines for Apartments and Compact Espresso Machines for Small Kitchens.
Common mistakes
Buying a resale unit or an unknown third-party offer thinking it is a new Bambino. Check the seller and condition.
Choosing the Barista Express for an apartment because it has a built-in grinder. It is a different kind of machine and is not what we recommend here.
Expecting this guide to cover the Dedica or the Stilosa. Each has its own guide.
Skipping the grinder. Dual-wall baskets are a start, not a dial-in. Get an espresso-capable grinder such as the C3 ESP (not the Pro). A drip grinder will not work.
Trusting an old price. Prices change, so check Amazon when you buy.
Confusing the Bambino with the Bambino Plus, the Dedica Deluxe, or the CASABREWS. They are different machines.
Assuming 51 mm Dedica or 58 mm Gaggia parts fit the Bambino. Check that a basket is 54 mm before you buy it.
Planning to plumb it in. It uses a removable tank, and a rental does not give you a drain line.
FAQ
Is Breville Bambino good for apartments?
Yes, if you want compact ThermoJet weekday speed, a removable tank, and a machine you can move at move-out. Buy it new from a seller you trust.
What is the best Bambino for a small kitchen?
This guide covers the regular Bambino, BES450BSS. The Bambino Plus adds automatic milk texturing and is a separate model. We do not recommend the Barista Express for an apartment.
Is Bambino ThermoJet a good apartment espresso machine?
Yes, for renters who want fast weekday heat-up in a compact machine with a tank and will still buy a grinder. Breville US says ThermoJet is ready in 3 seconds. Check both sets of dimensions before you order.
Does Bambino need a grinder for apartment espresso?
Yes, if you want espresso beyond dual-wall pre-ground coffee. A good match is the TIMEMORE Chestnut C3 ESP (not the Pro). See our grinder guide for the Breville Bambino.
Can I plumb in Bambino on a rented counter?
No. It uses a removable tank. Fill the tank; do not drill the counter.
How big is Bambino for a rented counter?
Breville US lists 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 in (W × D × H). Amazon often lists 13.7"D × 6.3"W × 12"H and about 10.9 lb. Measure your space before you order.
Should I buy Barista Express instead for apartments?
Not as your apartment machine, in our view. The Barista Express is an all-in-one with a built-in grinder, which is a different kind of machine. If you want a compact ThermoJet machine, buy the Bambino and pair it with a C3 ESP.
What about the Bambino Plus?
The Bambino Plus adds an automatic steam wand and is a separate model with its own guide. If that is the one you want, buy it new.
