Quick Verdict

If you need a new pump espresso machine under $300 for a rented counter, buy the De'Longhi Stilosa (EC260BK). Buy it new and check the seller and current price on Amazon. Skip resale offers.

Keep the Breville Bambino in mind if fast ThermoJet heat-up on weekdays and a narrower compact body matter more. We do not link a Bambino listing in this guide, because the Amazon offer we found was from a third-party seller (Four Seasons Trading Company), not Amazon.com. If you choose the Bambino, buy it new; see our apartment machines guide and small-kitchen compact guide.

Do not buy the CASABREWS 3700 as your main under-$300 apartment machine. It is a budget compact machine with more compromises, and it is not the one we recommend here.

Pair the Stilosa with an espresso-capable grinder. We suggest the TIMEMORE C3 ESP. A drip grinder will not work, and you do not need the C3 ESP Pro.

If you need a new machine under $300 for a rented counter, buy the Stilosa. If weekday speed and a compact body are what you want, choose the Bambino, and buy it new. If you just want something cheaper than the Stilosa, know that it comes with more compromises.

Apartment counter, tank, and the renter test

Measure the counter, not the lifestyle photo.

Amazon lists the Stilosa at 8.07 in deep × 13.5 in wide × 11.22 in tall. That is compact in depth and height, but 13.5 in of width is a lot. Small city kitchens often have only about two feet of counter for the machine plus a grinder. If you wanted a body about 6 in wide, like the Dedica, the Stilosa is not that machine. Measure 13.5 in plus room to swing the portafilter, a pitcher, and a cloth for wiping down that does not have to live in the dish rack.

The tank is the apartment feature. Amazon lists a removable 1000 ml / 33.8 fl oz tank, and De'Longhi US lists 33.81 oz. That is a compact tank, not a cafe reservoir. You refill it; you do not plumb in. If you are renting and cannot drill for a drain, this is what you want. Keep the machine near the sink so the walk to refill is short.

Weight is the move-out test. Amazon lists 9.5 lb, and De'Longhi US lists 8.61 lb. Either way, you can lift it without a second person. It is lighter than the 20 lb Gaggia, but it is not something you put away in a drawer. Pick a permanent spot, and plan the move.

The Bambino is the narrower option. Our research found Amazon dimensions of 13.7 in deep × 6.3 in wide × 12 in tall and about 10.9 lb. That makes it narrower but deeper, with fast ThermoJet heat-up. We still do not link it here, because the offer we found was third-party.

The Stilosa listing does not give a heat-up time, so do not assume the Bambino's three-second ThermoJet figure applies. Plan a short weekday wait, then brew, steam, and wipe. With a compact single-path machine like this, you also wait after the shot before the steam is ready. If speed at 6 a.m. is what really matters, read the Bambino guides, and buy the Bambino new.

Renter test: can you unplug a 9.5 lb machine with a tank, box it, and take it to the next apartment without a cart? Yes. Can you ignore 13.5 in of width on the counter? No. Check the width before you order.

Grinder pairing

The machine is not the whole setup, and the Stilosa does not grind. Pressurized baskets let you start with pre-ground coffee, but they will not let you dial in a single-wall shot. A blade mill or a drip burr grinder will choke the shot or let it gush.

The grinder we suggest is the TIMEMORE Chestnut C3 ESP (not the C3 ESP Pro). It is espresso-capable, has no motor, and fits in a drawer, leaving the Stilosa as the one appliance on the counter. Our grinder guide for the Breville Bambino explains it in detail, and the advice applies to the Stilosa too.

If you already know you will not hand grind, read First Espresso Setup If You Cannot Hand Grind and Baratza Encore vs Encore ESP. Buy any electric grinder new. This guide does not cover the Encore in detail.

You still need a scale, because dose and yield have to be weighed. See our beginner espresso setup guide and how to split a beginner budget. Spend any money left over on the grinder and scale before a standalone frother. The Stilosa already has a manual steam wand.

De'Longhi Stilosa

Good for: renters who need a new tank-fed machine under $300 for the counter

Why we chose it:

The De'Longhi Stilosa Compact Manual Espresso Machine with Manual Milk Frother (model EC260BK, black and stainless) is the machine this guide recommends. Per the listing, it has a compact tank, a 15-bar pump, a stainless steel boiler, two filters, and a two-level cup holder, and it needs no plumbing. Buy it new, and check the current price and seller on Amazon before you order. Resale "Used - Like New" offers are not new.

Small-space notes:

The 8.07 in depth suits small apartments; the 13.5 in width is what to check. Measure cabinet height against 11.22 in plus cup clearance. Keep it near the sink, pull the tank to refill, and wipe the wand after steaming. Descaling is part of owning it, not an optional extra. Amazon reviews mention leaks when owners skip this maintenance.

Tradeoff:

You get a new pump machine under $300 that you can move. You give up the Bambino's ThermoJet speed, its narrower width, and its 54 mm accessories. You also give up a 58 mm portafilter. The Stilosa is a budget machine, not a 58 mm machine to keep for years.

Before you buy on Amazon:

Check that the listing is the EC260BK in black and stainless. Also check that it is new, the 120 V US version, and includes the portafilter and two filters, and check returns and the current price. Skip resale offers. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C96BG9H?tag=next-1-20

Breville Bambino (why we do not link it here)

Good for: fast weekday heat-up and a narrower compact body, bought new

The Bambino is the compact machine we suggest for most apartments, in Espresso Machines for Apartments and Compact Espresso Machines for Small Kitchens. It has fast heat-up and a 54 mm portafilter, needs no plumbing, and has no built-in grinder.

We do not link a Bambino listing in this guide. In our research, the main Amazon offer was from Four Seasons Trading Company, a third-party seller, not Amazon.com. A used or third-party unit is not the same as buying new. Buy new, and use those other guides to find the listing.

We compare the Bambino with the Dedica in Breville Bambino vs De'Longhi Dedica. This guide does not cover the Bambino Plus or the Barista Express.

CASABREWS 3700 (a cheaper alternative)

Good for: a cheap compact first try, though it is not what this guide recommends

The CASABREWS 3700 Essential is the budget compact machine covered in our small-kitchen machine guide. We mention it so you do not mistake "cheaper than the Stilosa" for "the better apartment machine." It comes with more compromises and fewer long-term parts options.

We do not recommend it as your main machine here. If it really is your budget choice, check the seller, returns, and included baskets on Amazon.

Common mistakes

Buying a resale "Used - Like New" Stilosa thinking it is new.

Assuming the Bambino is sold by Amazon.com. In our research, the offer was from Four Seasons Trading Company, a third-party seller.

Buying the CASABREWS because it is cheaper and treating it as the better under-$300 apartment machine.

Skipping the grinder. The Stilosa needs espresso-capable burrs. Get a grinder such as the C3 ESP (not the C3 ESP Pro). A drip grinder will not work.

Assuming 54 mm Bambino parts or 58 mm Gaggia parts fit the Stilosa. Amazon's specs table does not give the diameter, so check it before you buy a basket.

Ignoring the 13.5 in width because the Amazon photo makes it look small.

Planning to plumb it in. It uses a removable tank, and a rental does not give you a drain line.

Spending leftover money on a kettle or frother before buying the C3 ESP and a scale.

Expecting this guide to recommend a Dedica, Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Gaggia, Picopresso, or CASABREWS CM5418. Other guides cover those.

Worrying about grinder noise at 6 a.m.? A manual grinder like the C3 ESP has no motor. See our grinder guide for the Bambino.

FAQ

What is the best espresso machine under $300 for an apartment?

We recommend the De'Longhi Stilosa, bought new. Check the seller and current price before you order. The Bambino is the compact machine we suggest for most apartments when you can buy it new, but we do not link it here. The CASABREWS is not our pick.

Does the Breville Bambino fit a $300 budget?

Prices change, so compare your budget with the current Amazon price. In our research, the main Amazon offer was from a third-party seller (Four Seasons Trading Company), not Amazon.com, so we do not link it here. If you choose the Bambino, buy it new; see our machine guides.

Does the Stilosa need a grinder?

Yes, if you want espresso rather than pressurized pre-ground coffee. Pair it with an espresso-capable grinder. We suggest the TIMEMORE Chestnut C3 ESP (not the Pro). See our grinder guide for the Breville Bambino.

Can I plumb in the Stilosa?

No. It uses a compact removable tank, which is what makes it renter-friendly. Fill the tank; do not drill the counter.

How wide is the Stilosa?

Amazon lists 8.07 in D × 13.5 in W × 11.22 in H. Measure for the 13.5 in width, not just the depth. De'Longhi US lists 13.5 × 8.07 × 11.22 without labeling the axes. Check the listing when you order.

What voltage is the US Stilosa?

Amazon's technical details list 110 volts, and De'Longhi US lists 120 V. Check that you are buying the US version. Do not import a 220–240 V machine for a US apartment.

Is CASABREWS a better under-$300 pick?

No. The CASABREWS 3700 is cheaper, but that does not make it the better choice.

Why doesn't this guide recommend the Gaggia or Dedica?

The Gaggia sits above this budget and has its own guide. The Dedica is covered in its own guide. This guide recommends one new machine: the Stilosa.

Final Recommendation

If you need a new pump machine under $300 for a rented counter, buy the De'Longhi Stilosa new, and check the seller and current price. Skip resale offers.

If you want the compact weekday machine, choose the Bambino, buy it new, and see our machine guides for the listing. In our research, the Bambino offer was from a third-party seller, not Amazon.com.

Do not substitute the CASABREWS. Pair the Stilosa with a TIMEMORE C3 ESP (not the Pro).

Before buying, recheck the seller, exact model, color, voltage, condition, returns, price, and availability on amazon.com.
