Quick Answer

No. Don't put an espresso machine on or right next to a gas or electric stove. The Breville manuals we checked for this guide and De'Longhi's Stilosa manual all say not to place the machine on or near a hot gas or electric burner, and the Bambino manuals also name a hot plate, oven or gas hob as heat sources to keep it away from. In a small kitchen, the counter right beside the cooktop is hard to call anything but near, so find the machine another spot.

No manual we checked gives a safe distance from a stove, so this guide doesn't give one either. If your only free counter is beside the stove, the better fix is a different spot, not a measured gap.

Evidence in this guide: Manufacturer-researched (Breville, De'Longhi, Nespresso and CASABREWS instruction manuals, checked October 31, 2026) and forum discussion (Reddit). Nothing here is hands-on tested. Where a point is our general advice rather than a manual instruction, we label it as general advice. This is an explainer, not a ranking.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is only about the stove. For measuring the counter space a whole setup needs, see How Much Counter Space Do You Need for an Espresso Setup?

What the Manuals Say, Model by Model

Page numbers below are the page of the PDF file.

Breville Bambino (BES450) and Bambino Plus (BES500)

Breville Barista Express (BES870)

Breville Dual Boiler (BES920)

De'Longhi Stilosa (EC260)

De'Longhi Dedica (EC685, EU edition manual)

A capsule machine says the same thing

Nespresso's safety leaflet for its Gemini capsule machines (CS200 and CS220) is not about a portafilter machine, but it shows the same concern: "Never place the machine on a hot surface, e.g. a heating plate. Never use it around an open flame." (Nespresso Gemini safety leaflet, page 2 of the PDF, the first English page)

CASABREWS (3700)

The CASABREWS 3700 manual we checked has no clause about stoves, burners or other heat sources. That doesn't mean the stove side is fine for it. The manual simply doesn't address it, so ask CASABREWS.

What Counts as Near When No Manual Gives a Distance

None of these manuals puts a number on near. We won't invent one, and we'd be wary of any figure that isn't from your own machine's manufacturer.

What the manuals do name is the heat: a hot gas or electric burner, a hot plate, an oven, a gas hob and, in the Nespresso leaflet, an open flame. If a pan, a burner or the oven door can heat the spot where your machine sits, that's the situation these warnings describe.

Induction cooktops: none of the manuals we checked mentions induction, so they don't tell us whether it's any different. Don't treat an induction hob as an exception. Give it the same room you'd give any other stove.

What Owners Report: Heat, Flame and Grease

These are individual owners' comments, not manufacturer statements and not measurements. No manual we checked mentions grease, oil or cooking fumes. That concern comes from owners.

On September 17, 2020 (UTC), an owner weighing a spot directly beside their stove wrote: "My electric stove gets really hot as does anything near it, so also curious if that would be a worry damaging the outside of the machine in any way." In a direct reply to the post on September 18, 2020 (UTC), a commenter said: "I would not put it near the stove. Not only because of heat but also grease and other oil and “splatters”." (Reddit, "Lelit Placement Question")

When an owner asked whether the heat at their machine's spot was a worry, one direct reply to the post on September 7, 2023 (UTC) asked: "Gas burner? I'd be more worried about the flames scorching the grinder body." Another direct reply, dated September 8, 2023 (UTC), said: "I will be more worried of the cooking oil splashing onto the machine" (Reddit, "Do I really need to worry?").

Under a post showing a new machine and grinder, where commenters pointed out the stove beside them, a direct reply to the post on October 13, 2025 (UTC) warned: "Both grinder and espresso machine will be covered in grease in days if you cook daily. Not a good placement. That grease settles on paint and it’s impossible to clean." (Reddit, "Returned the Touch Impress and Dove into the Deep End (Profitec + Libra)")

And on September 24, 2026 (UTC), an owner waiting on a new machine explained their own hesitation: "the only free space is right next to the induction hob. I’d rather not put the machine there because of all the grease and mess from cooking." (Reddit, "Where have you positioned your machine?")

So the manuals cover heat and flame, and owners add grease and oil from cooking. Both point the same way: move the machine.

Keep the Cord Away From the Stove Too

The Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express and Stilosa manuals also say the cord mustn't touch hot surfaces. The Bambino Plus manual, for example, says: "Do not let the power cord hang over the edge of a table or counter-top, or touch hot surfaces." (BES500 US manual, page 3). The Stilosa US manual says: "Do not let the cord hang over the edge of the table or counter, or touch hot surfaces." (page 4). FAQ

How far from the stove should an espresso machine be?

No manual we checked gives a distance. The Breville manuals and the Stilosa manual say not to place the machine on or near a hot gas or electric burner. If your machine would sit right beside the cooktop, move it to another spot rather than guessing at a gap.

Is an induction cooktop safer to sit next to?

The manuals we checked don't mention induction, so they don't say it's any different. Don't treat it as an exception.

My machine's manual doesn't mention stoves. Is the stove side fine then?

Not necessarily. The CASABREWS 3700 manual we checked has no stove clause, but silence isn't permission. Ask the manufacturer, and use another spot if you can.

Does cooking grease damage an espresso machine?

The manuals we checked don't mention grease. Owners in the threads above say grease and cooking oil coat machines kept beside a stove and are hard to clean off. That's their experience, not a manufacturer statement.

Bottom Line

Don't put an espresso machine on or next to a gas or electric stove. The Breville manuals and De'Longhi's Stilosa manual say to keep it off and away from hot burners, none of them gives a distance, none treats induction as an exception, and owners add grease and oil to the list. Find the machine another spot, such as a sturdy cart or a stretch of counter away from the cooktop.
