Quick Answer
A grinder in a small kitchen stays easier to live with if you split its care into a few short habits instead of one big cleaning day. This guide sorts those habits into a schedule:
- Daily: a quick wrap-up of the dosing area and counter.
- Weekly: a short check-in to catch problems early. This is a reminder rhythm we suggest, not a manufacturer interval.
- Monthly: brushing off the burrs, which Baratza suggests "about once a month" for an Encore ESP used daily.
- As needed: cleaning tablets, clogs, and burr replacement.
This guide tells you when to do each job. For how to do the cleaning itself, follow How to Clean an Espresso Grinder in a Small Apartment Without Making a Mess and your grinder's manual. This is a schedule, not a ranking.
Evidence in this guide: Manufacturer-researched (Baratza's Encore ESP operations manual) and forum discussion (Reddit r/Coffee). Apartment Barista did not test these grinders.

What Beginners Have Asked (Forum Discussion)
"How often?" is the question new grinder owners keep asking. On February 23, 2020, an r/Coffee member with a Baratza Encore wrote: "How often should I use Grindz to clean? I'm sure it depends on how often I use the Baratza, but any good rules of thumb?" (Reddit, "Grindz, Baratza, Clean With What Beans?")
On October 10, 2017, another r/Coffee member wrote: "I just recently purchased my first burr grinder (Baratza Encore) and was wondering how often I should be cleaning it." (Reddit, "How often to clean burr grinder when switching coffee?")
Both posts are about the original Baratza Encore, not the Encore ESP, and they are individual questions, not measurements. They show why a simple schedule helps.
Before Any Cleaning: Unplug
Baratza's Encore ESP manual is direct about this: "ALWAYS unplug the electrical supply cord prior to cleaning the grinder." Make it the first step of every job below that goes beyond wiping the outside.
Daily: Quick Wrap-Up
The daily part is the end-of-day routine from our setup guide: deal with stray grounds, empty the dosing cup, decide whether beans stay in the hopper, and tuck the cord away. See Step 7 of Setting Up a New Coffee Grinder in a Small Apartment: Your First-Week Checklist for the full list.
One daily habit comes straight from the Encore ESP manual. It warns that a clog can form "if coffee is allowed to mound up past the maximum fill line on the grounds bin." Empty the grounds bin before it reaches that line.
Weekly: A Short Check-In
Baratza does not give a weekly task, so treat this as a reminder to look, not a cleaning interval. Once a week, ask yourself:
- Is coffee falling into the grounds bin normally? The manual describes a possible clog when "coffee is not falling into the grounds bin while grinding."
- What beans have you been using? Dark, oily, or flavored coffee affects the as-needed tablet decision below.
- Is the dosing area staying contained? If grounds keep escaping, revisit the static tips in the setup guide.
If nothing looks off, you are done for the week.
Monthly: Brush Off the Burrs
This is the one interval the Encore ESP manual gives:
"If the grinder is used daily, the burrs should be brushed off regularly (about once a month) with the included brush."
The manual adds that "The burrs do not need to be removed from the grinder for cleaning, but it will allow for a more thorough cleaning." For the low-mess way to do it on a small counter, follow How to Clean an Espresso Grinder in a Small Apartment Without Making a Mess.
While you have the grinder apart, you can also wash the removable plastic parts. The manual says:
"The grounds bin, hopper, hopper lid, and hopper gasket can be washed with warm, soapy water. Rinse and let air dry. Do not allow the burrs to get wet, otherwise they will rust."
Baratza does not give a set interval for washing those parts. Pairing it with the monthly burr brushing is simply a convenient time to do it.
As Needed: Tablets, Clogs, and Burr Replacement
Cleaning tablets. Baratza does not give a tablet schedule. The manual says: "If dark, oily, or flavored coffee is used often, grinder cleaning tablets may need to be used in order to absorb the oils left behind by the coffee." It also says to follow the tablet maker's instructions, and: "Do not grind any substance other than grinder cleaning tablets to clean the internals of the grinder."
Clogs. The manual says regular cleaning and proper use can prevent a clogged grinder. If coffee stops coming out, follow the clog section of your manual rather than improvising.
Burr replacement. We did not obtain a burr life or a replacement interval from Baratza for the Encore ESP, so we don't give one here. Check with Baratza if you think your burrs are worn.
KINGrinder K6. We did not obtain a maintenance interval for the K6 from KINGrinder. Follow the instructions that came with your grinder.

Grinders in This Schedule
The Baratza Encore ESP is the grinder whose manual this schedule quotes. For more on owning one in a small kitchen, see Baratza Encore ESP for Apartments.
The KINGrinder K6 is a hand grinder. We did not obtain a maintenance interval for it, so the monthly and tablet guidance above comes from Baratza's manual and applies to the Encore ESP only. See KINGrinder K6 for Apartments.
Bottom Line
Keep the daily wrap-up short, look things over once a week, and on an Encore ESP used daily, brush off the burrs about once a month as Baratza suggests. Use cleaning tablets only in the situations the manual describes, and treat burr replacement and K6 intervals as questions for the manufacturer. For the cleaning steps themselves, use the how-to-clean guide.
